Up for sale is a beautifully preserved 15-inch antique maritime caulking iron, hand-forged by the historic German toolmaker J.A. Schietinger. This single-man shipwright\'s tool was designed for manually driving oakum or cotton packing deep into the seams of wooden ship hulls and decks.
This piece features a distinct, crisply struck maker\'s mark reading \"J.A. SCHIETINGER\" along with a clean star proof stamp—a signature mark of quality from this traditional blacksmith foundry. It also has a “5” stamp.
The tool showcases a classic offset handle, engineered to give the shipwright a clear line of sight down the deck seam while keeping their hand safe from the swing of a heavy mallet. The wedge-shaped iron block tapers smoothly down to a blunt caulking edge.
Specifications:
• Total Length: 15 inches
• Maker: J.A. Schietinger (Germany)
Condition:
The iron boasts a fantastic, honest shipyard patina with rich, deep coloration and light oxidation consistent with its age. There is minimal mushrooming on the striking face, and no catastrophic pitting, deep cracks, or structural integrity issues.
A superb addition to any maritime history, blacksmithing, or industrial tool collection. Thanks for looking. Ships quickly and securely.
