Antique Indian Wars Era US Model 1858 Cavalry Canteen Blue Wool Cover Cork Hook For Sale

This is an antique US Model 1858 pattern canteen from the Indian Wars era, circa 1870s to 1890s, from a collection of cavalry supplies. It has a round metal body with a dark blue wool cover, a metal spout, and a cork stopper. A leather cord runs through the cork, and a leather-wrapped wire loop with a small iron chain is attached. Three iron strap guides hold a khaki cotton twill shoulder strap, which is knotted and fitted with a forged iron snap hook. The canteen measures about 8 1/2 inches tall to the top of the cork and about 7 1/2 inches across the body. It is in as-found condition with heavy age and wear. The wool cover has holes, moth damage, and areas of loss that show the rusted metal body underneath, along with staining, grime, and a seam that is separating along the edge. The strap guides, chain, and snap hook have rust. The cork is dry and cracked. The strap has staining, grime, fraying, and an old hand-sewn repair. No markings were found. It has not been cleaned. The era is based on the canteen\'s design and features, since there are no markings to confirm a date. Please see all photos for condition and treat them as part of the description. Ships promptly and securely from a smoke free environment.
