Antique Hand-Carved Indian Soapstone 7-Well Paniyaram Pan / ChattiA wonderful old example of traditional South Indian stone cookware, hand carved from a substantial piece of soapstone.The pan features seven deep rounded cooking wells traditionally used for preparing paniyaram and related South Indian foods. It measures approximately 9 inches in diameter.Unlike modern manufactured versions, this example has a wonderfully irregular, hand-worked character. Particularly attractive are the distinctive carved projections around the perimeter and the substantial thickness visible from the side.The soapstone has developed a deep black-brown seasoned surface from extensive use, with scratches, rubbing, edge wear and areas where the lighter natural stone is visible. These characteristics give the piece tremendous primitive and ethnographic appeal.The underside retains extensive old surface wear and hand-working marks. No maker’s mark is present.Condition:
Good antique/vintage condition consistent with considerable age and traditional use. Surface wear, scratches, abrasions, small edge losses/chips and discoloration are present throughout. Please examine all photographs carefully. The piece has intentionally not been cleaned or restored, preserving its old seasoned surface and patina.Measurements:
