A wonderfully visual 1879 children's book, profusely illustrated throughout and preserved in unusually bright pictorial paper-covered boards—an appealing survivor of Victorian juvenile publishing.

Little Playfellows.New York, London and Paris: Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. Copyright 1879 by O. M. Dunham. Quarter cloth over pictorial paper-covered boards.94 pages. Approximately 6 × 8½ inches.

The book isprofusely illustrated, with numerous full-page engravings as well as illustrations accompanying the stories. The subjects range widely through Victorian childhood and family life, animals, travel, sailing and adventure, including a Christmas story and a striking whaling narrative.

Particularly appealing is the colorful original pictorial front board, combining a child and dog vignette with owls, flowers and bold geometric ornament. The combination of an early illustrated children's book and a highly decorative cover gives the volume considerable display appeal as well as interest for collectors of Victorian juvenile literature.

Condition:GOOD+. Lacking front endpaper; ownership name on title page; writing and staining to endpapers. Interior remarkably clean with only light occasional foxing. Binding firm. Spine very good indeed. Front pictorial board remains bright, with moderate rubbing to the extremities and heavier wear at the corners.
