Antique Ebonized Wood Picture Frame • Deep Cove Molding • London Antique Shop Find • c.1900

A striking antique ebonized wood picture frame personally sourced from an antique shop in London, England.

The frame features a substantial architectural profile with a dramatic deep cove molding, stepped inner molding and glossy black ebonized finish. The restrained design gives it a wonderful late-Victorian/turn-of-the-century appearance and makes it particularly suitable for an antique portrait, small oil painting, print, photograph or textile.

The reverse retains considerable evidence of age, including its old brown paper covering, exposed wood construction, metal hanging fitting and braided hanging cord. The cord is now frayed and should not be relied upon for hanging.

Based upon its construction, materials and appearance, I believe this is a late 19th to early 20th century frame, approximately c.1900. No maker’s mark has been found, and the date is an attribution rather than a documented manufacture date.

• Maximum depth/profile: approximately 1¼”

The frame can be displayed vertically or horizontally after appropriate hanging hardware is installed.

Condition

Good antique condition with substantial age-related character.

The black ebonized finish shows scratches, scuffs, fine surface marks and scattered small losses consistent with age and use. The original/older brown paper covering on the reverse is torn, lifting and missing in areas, exposing portions of the wood underneath.

The old braided hanging cord is frayed/broken and is not suitable for hanging. New hanging hardware should be installed before use.

No attempt has been made to refinish or restore the frame. It is being offered in the condition in which it was found.
