Unusual antique Austrian porcelain figural oil lamp base by E.W. Turn Wien, featuring a wonderfully modeled group of elephants supporting an elaborate tasseled canopy or howdah.
The base is finished in warm ivory tones with brown, gold and gilt decoration. The elephants are nicely modeled with expressive faces, curled trunks and individually detailed feet and ears. The raised base and elaborate textile-like decoration give the piece a strong Orientalist / exotic Victorian-era decorative appearance.
Marked underneath with the blue crown trademark reading “E.W. Turn Wien / Made in Austria,” along with impressed and hand-applied numbers. The top retains a threaded metal collar for mounting the lamp hardware. Offered as the figural lamp base only, as photographed.
Measures approximately 9.75 inches high x 9 inches wide x 9 inches deep. Inner opening/fitter is approximately 3/4 inch diameter.
Condition is good overall considering age, but there is damage to the elephant tusks. Two tusks have chipped/lost ends and another tusk has an old repair, as clearly shown in the close-up photographs. There is also typical age-related surface and gilt wear, light soiling and other minor imperfections. Please examine all photographs closely as they are an important part of the condition description.
A scarce and highly decorative Austrian figural lamp base that would be an excellent candidate for restoration or completion with appropriate period lamp hardware.
