JE Artist Monogram
Up for Sale or send an offer before it goes to the sale house) is an incredibly rare, authentic antique Halloween store counter display sign from the early 20th century (circa 1910s–1920s. This gorgeous piece heavily features striking, organic Art Nouveau illustration styles, showcasing a central witch with long white hair holding a blank merchant placard, flanked by stylized wings and two green-clad elves or pixies standing on pumpkins.
This is an exceptionally rare find for holiday ephemera collectors because it is unused blank stock. Merchants would typically write custom store pricing or text (e.g., "Halloween Masks 5¢") inside the center rectangle. Because it was never written on, the breathtaking artwork remains entirely uncompromised
Item Description:
Authentic Early 20th-Century Art Nouveau Halloween Illustration Layout
Up for sale is a remarkable, one-of-a-kind piece of commercial design history. This is an original, hand-executed illustration draft or publisher's mockup featuring a beautifully rendered Art Nouveau witch holding a blank central placard.
Key Features & Provenance Evidence:
• Visible Pencil Layout Lines: Look closely at the photos, and you will see the authentic graphite/lead pencil under-drawings and trace lines beneath the paint. These layout lines map out the borders, the wings, and the layered background imps. This serves as definitive physical proof that this is a unique hand-painted studio draft, not a printed lithograph or modern reproduction
• Masterful Monogram: The piece features a highly clever, integrated artist monogram at the baseline center of the witch's gown. The signature forms an interlocking "JE" using a fluid orange loop and the negative space of the black paint.
• Classic Art Nouveau Aesthetic: The illustration showcases iconic hallmarks of the 1910s–1920s design movement, including the witch's long flowing silver hair, elongated elegant hands, and the organic, sweeping curves framing the central figure. Hidden fairy/elf figures peek out from behind stylized green jack-o'-lantern spheres at the base
• Commercial Purpose: The central rectangular placard was intentionally left as blank cardstock. In the golden age of holiday manufacturing, this "comprehensive layout" allowed publishers or local shop owners to visualize exactly where custom text, store hours, or menus would be written or printed.
• Period-Correct Condition: The artwork is executed on a heavy, natural brown chipboard/cardboard backing. The back is entirely blank, showing age-appropriate oxidation and honest wear along the edges, consistent with an antique paper artifact of this era
• Material: Heavy, thick antique cardboard / chipboard stock.
• Aesthetic: High illustration quality, stunning muted autumn color palette characteristic of the golden age of American commercial illustration.
• Subject: Witch, Bats/Wings, Pixies/Elves, and Pumpkins/Jack-o'-Lanterns.
• Crossover Appeal: Perfect for serious collectors of vintage Halloween, early American retail advertising, or antique Art Nouveau lithography
