Stunning 19th-Century Ecclesiastical Embroidered Red Velvet Altar Valance
Offered here is a substantial and beautifully preserved 19th-century religious textile, historically used as an altar super-frontal or valance. Measuring an impressive 70" x 14", this complete, single-piece textile features three distinct panels framed by antique gold lace trim.
The central panel features exquisite, heavily padded stumpwork (high-relief embroidery) utilizing genuine metallic silver and gold bullion threads. It depicts a traditional Eucharistic motif of wheat stalks and grape clusters, symbolizing the bread and wine. This central focus is flanked by two matching side panels featuring beautifully worked olive branch trees with small round fruits, representing peace and the Holy Spirit.
This antique piece has been thoughtfully stabilized for longevity. The reverse side features a newer, high-quality, breathable natural linen/cotton slub backing attached neatly along the perimeter. This backing protects the delicate antique velvet from sagging or straining under the weight of the heavy metal embroidery, making it completely stable and ready for display or framing.
