Antique 1913 Signed George Washington Repoussé Copper Plaque Arts Crafts
Description
Antique Signed George Washington Repoussé Copper Plaque – Dated 1913
Offered is a handsome antique hand-worked repoussé copper plaque depicting George Washington in left-facing profile. Executed in low relief and dated 1913, this attractive Arts & Crafts / Colonial Revival piece displays exceptional character and original patina acquired over more than a century.
The profile closely resembles the classic Washington likeness derived from early American sculptural portraits, featuring his distinctive tied queue hairstyle and strong facial profile. The image has been skillfully raised from the reverse side of the metal sheet using traditional repoussé techniques, creating a subtle but highly effective sculptural effect.
The plaque is signed by the artist in the lower right corner and dated 1913. While the surname appears to read “Robert Jorg…” or similar, the artist has not been positively identified.
The reverse retains its original hanging ring and clearly shows the hand-worked construction. An excellent example of early twentieth-century American decorative metalwork that appeals to collectors of Americana, George Washington memorabilia, Colonial Revival art, and Arts & Crafts metalwork.

Historical Context
During the Colonial Revival movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, images of George Washington became highly popular decorative subjects in American homes, schools, and public buildings. Craftsmen working within the Arts & Crafts movement often created hand-hammered copper and bronze decorative objects celebrating American history and patriotic themes.
This plaque represents a fine example of that tradition and remains an attractive display piece more than 110 years after its creation.
