Decoration Day: The practice began after the American Civil War as communities decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, wreaths, and flags.
Major General John A. Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (a Union veterans group), officially established Decoration Day on May 30, 1868.The name officially transitioned to Memorial Day, and it was declared a federal holiday in 1971 through the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving the observance to the last Monday in May.
