Antique 18th Century 1682 Our Lady of Guadalupe Saint Michael Archangel Medal For Sale

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the CatholicCounter-Reformation reshaped Europe and expanded into the Americas toevangelize native peoples. Bronze medals were a significant but common object mintedduring this period. Each medal tells a unique story because they are sourced fromCatholic convents, estate collections, and metal detector enthusiasts.

Due to their use, being touched hundreds or thousands oftimes, and often being carried and worn in harsh environments, the medals willshow the natural surface wear (patina) created by their age, use in devotion,and by exposure to the elements. They are found in modern days both aboveground in sometimes buried, as with other artifacts.

Description - This medal is 2 inches long and weighs 33grams of bronze. It is dated 1682 as you can see at the feet of the Virgin ofGuadalupe in the posted pictures. All our listed items are original Christiandevotionals. Some may have been cleaned or polished before their arrival, bytheir last caretaker. Their use is for personal devotion.

Please note, the medal is offered for sale, not the pictures.This medal is from my mother\'s estate collection. Bertha who passed away in2010 at age 97, (The founder of Church-Woman Antiques). Her inventory notesmention the following. In the late 17th century, the Bishop of Mexicoauthorized a Catholic devotional medal of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A limitednumber of those medals were minted in Rome and used as gifts for wealthyCatholic patrons. That medal helped the bishop (Francisco de Aguiar y Seijas)fund the building of the new Basilica from 1682-1708. This is one of thosemedals. Similar medals can be found in the Franciscan Museum in Rome. A copy ofthat medal collection is posted for reference.
