Original nineteenth-century handwritten account book containing farm and labor accounts, financial transactions, and extensive personal and family estate notes.
Photographed entries include dates beginning in 1867 and continuing into the 1870s. Accounts record goods and services such as vinegar, corn, hay hauling, mowing, harvesting, threshing, plowing, and butchering, along with payments and balances. Other passages discuss debts, property, family members, and instructions concerning the writer’s estate.
The volume has an alphabetical index and 368 numbered ledger pages, including unused ruled pages. Marbled boards are finished with a red spine and corners. An embossed bookseller’s mark reads “Theo. F. Scheffer, Bookseller and Printer, 21 South Second St., Harrisburg, Pa.”
Includes the loose papers pictured: a handwritten letter, an 1886 Linglestown receipt for making cider, and a $3.50 Masonic Hall Association of Harrisburg interest coupon dated 1874.
Measures approximately 13.75” x 8.5” x 1”. An interesting original resource for Pennsylvania local history, agricultural history, and family research.
