Rawson Steam-Refined Candy Label - Worcester, Massachusetts AdvertisingUp for sale is an incredibly scarce, highly visual survivor of mid-19th-century American food advertising. This authentic paper packaging label was printed for "Assorted Steam-Refined Candy," manufactured by prominent local confectioner D. J. Rawson at his downtown storefront in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Nineteenth-century confectionery packaging is exceptionally rare, as nearly all of it was discarded or ruined by sugar contact upon opening. This piece highlights the early industrial transition into "steam-refined" confectionery manufacturing, a process that allowed for the high-volume production of pristine sugar candies. The piece features striking two-color typography with elaborate ornamental corner borders and the classic marketing tagline: "Where may be found every variety of Choice Confectionery."
Historical & Regional Significance:The manufacturer, D. J. (DeWitt J.) Rawson, was a recorded 19th-century merchant and public official deeply rooted in Worcester's civic development, serving on early municipal boards alongside historic Mayor Levi Lincoln in the late 1840s and 1850s. The label prominently maps his specific early business venue at the vital intersection of Main Street and Southbridge Street.
