History:
Approximately 50,000 years ago, an iron-nickel meteorite known as the Canyon Diablo impacted into the plains of northern Arizona, vaporizing much of its mass and violently excavating the massive bowl-shaped depression now called Meteor Crater or Barringer Crater. While thousands of metallic fragments from this impact were later scattered across the surrounding region and recognized in the late 19th century, mining engineer Daniel Barringer famously argued in 1906 that the Meteor Crater itself was formed by this specific meteorite collision, fundamentally changing scientific understanding of planetary impact events.
In 1953, Clair Cameron Patterson analyzed lead isotope ratios in the Canyon Diablo meteorite samples, which allowed scientists to more accurately estimate the Earth\'s age at 4.55 billion years (with a margin of error of 70 million years).

Composition and classification
This meteorite is an ironoctahadrite. Minerals reported from the meteorite include:
- Cohenite- iron caroffere
- Chromite- iron magnesium chromium oxide
- Daubréelite- iron(II) chromium sulfide
- DiamondandIonsdaleite- carbon
- Graphite- carbon
- Haxonite- iron nickel caroffere
- Kamaciteiron nickel alloy - the most common component.
- Base Metal Sulfides
- Scheidbesite- iron nickel phosphide
- Taenite- iron nickel alloy
- Trolite- a variety of the iron sulfide mineral pyrrhotite. The troilite in this sample is used asthe standard reference for sulfurisotope ratios.
- Moissanite- a variety of silicon caroffere, the second hardest natural mineral.
Samples may contain troilite-graphite nodules with metal veins and small diamonds.
