3.8" Knightia sp. Fossil Fish – Sandwich Beds – Green River Formation – Wyoming
Offered here is an authentic Knightia sp. fossil fish from the Sandwich Beds (also known as the Split-Fish Layer) of the Fossil Butte Member, Green River Formation, near Kemmerer, Wyoming.
Knightia are among the classic fossil fish of Wyoming's world-famous Green River Formation. This specimen comes from the Sandwich Beds / Split-Fish Layer, a recognized fossil-bearing horizon within the Fossil Butte Member.
The fossil itself measures approximately 3.8 inches long. It is contained in a substantial limestone plate measuring approximately 5.9" wide × 3.9" tall × 0.45" thick.
This specimen has intentionally been left unprepared for the buyer.
Rather than purchasing a completely prepared fossil, the new owner has the opportunity to further expose and prepare the fish themselves or have the specimen professionally prepared.
A significant portion of the fossil is already visible within the natural matrix, including the vertebral column and additional skeletal material. The head is oriented toward the left and the tail toward the right as shown in the photographs.
Because this specimen remains unprepared, I make no guarantee regarding the completeness of the fish or exactly what additional fossil material or detail may be revealed during preparation. Part of the appeal of an unprepared fossil is discovering what remains beneath the matrix.

This is a natural fossil specimen, and the limestone may contain natural fractures, matrix variations, missing portions, edge irregularities and other characteristics associated with fossilization, extraction and splitting of the stone.
