1938 USSR Kharkiv October 21 Soviet Ukrainian Confectionery Wrapper Propaganda For Sale

Original pre-WWII Soviet Ukrainian confectionery wrapper / packaging, produced by the “October” Confectionery Factory in Kharkiv, Ukrainian SSR.

This exceptionally decorative piece features a colorful floral design printed in red, blue, green and yellow, with numerous stylized flowers covering almost the entire surface.

Across the center is the prominent Ukrainian inscription:

“21 ЖОВТЕНЬ”

The wrapper is associated with the Soviet October Revolution anniversary period and represents an interesting example of Soviet ideological imagery incorporated into everyday consumer packaging.

The manufacturer\'s mark reads:

“КОНД. Ф-КА ‘ОКТЯБРЬ’
г. ХАРЬКОВ”

and below:

“УССР НАРКОМПИЩЕПРОМ the October Confectionery Factory, Kharkiv, under the food-industry administration of the Ukrainian SSR.

The exact confectionery product originally contained in this wrapper has not been identified. Because of its relatively large 245 × 250 mm format, it may have been intended for wafer, candy, chocolate or another packaged confectionery product.

The wrapper survives unused / unfolded flat from its original packaging form, retaining the original factory printing and fold pattern.

Its combination of Ukrainian-language “ЖОВТЕНЬ,” Kharkiv manufacture, Soviet government food-industry marking, floral graphic design and pre-WWII period makes it an unusual piece of Soviet commercial and social history.
