Dated 1932 and approximately 94 years old, this striking antique red and green appliqué quilt features six large berry-and-leaf wreaths, remarkable hand-stitched details and exceptional hand quilting.
The six wreaths are appliquéd in deep green/teal with vivid red berries against a white ground. Look closely at the leaves—the decorative hand stitching along their outer edges creates a distinctive pointed, almost holly-like appearance and adds so much character to the design.
The hand quilting is spectacular. Feathered and foliate motifs, geometric patterns, diagonal designs and detailed fill quilting extend throughout the quilt. The white backing really shows off the quilting and the amount of handwork that went into this piece.
Along the left and right sides, linen creates a distinctive decorative border, accented by a narrow band of green and finished with green binding. It frames the quilt beautifully and adds another interesting design element to the overall composition.
The quilt also retains embroidered corner details, including the date 1932—a great feature to find on an antique quilt and one that gives us a direct connection to when it was 76" x 90"

White front and back showcases the good antique condition overall. There is age-related wear to portions of the edge binding, as shown in the photos, along with expected surface wear and color variation from age. The appliqué remains strong and the quilt displays extremely well.
Please look closely at all photos as they are an important part of the description and condition.
The classic red-and-green palette and wreath design make this an especially striking antique quilt for holiday display, while still being a quilt that can be enjoyed throughout the year. It would make a fabulous statement on a bed, draped over an antique chest or displayed as textile art.
With its 1932 date, bold appliqué, unusual stitched leaf details, decorative linen borders and exceptional hand quilting, this is a distinctive piece of American quilt history.
Even better in person.
