1927 Ohio University Bulletin High School Number Athens OH Chubb PhotosScarce circa 1927 Ohio University Bulletin – High School Number, New Series, Vol. XXII, Extra Number, issued by Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Titled “A Personal Letter” and written by Edwin Watts Chubb, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, this promotional bulletin was prepared for prospective high-school graduates considering attendance at Ohio University.
The publication provides an unusually detailed snapshot of Ohio University immediately before the Great Depression. The rear cover presents “14 Facts About Ohio University,” including contemporary enrollment figures, tuition and registration costs, estimated student expenses, number of campus buildings and dormitories, university finances and geographic information about Athens. Among the wonderfully period-specific figures: tuition is described as free with a $35-per-semester registration fee, while approximately $400 was estimated to cover a student\'s annual fees, board, room, books and laundry.
Especially desirable is the bulletin\'s extensive photographic documentation of the 1920s Ohio University campus. Numerous halftone photographs depict university buildings and grounds, including Cutler Hall, Ewing Hall, Super Hall and other campus scenes. These images provide excellent architectural and institutional documentation of the Athens campus nearly a century ago.The author, Edwin Watts Chubb, was an important figure in Ohio University history. Ohio University records that Chubb became Dean of the College of Liberal Arts in 1907 and twice served as acting university president. The university later named Chubb Hall in his honor.
Also included is the original Ohio University President\'s Office mailing envelope, printed “Bulletin From the President\'s Office / Ohio University / Athens, Ohio” and originally addressed by hand to a recipient in Kenton, Ohio. The survival of the publication together with its original institutional mailing envelope is a particularly nice feature.
An appealing piece of Ohio University, Athens, Ohio educational and collegiate history, particularly suitable for alumni, institutional-history, architectural-history and Ohio ephemera collections. Ohio University\'s archives maintain an extensive collection of historical university bulletins and related publications, underscoring their usefulness as primary documentation of the institution\'s history.
