Original pre-WWII British souvenir postcard packet from the TOWER OF LONDON, officially printed for H.M. Office of Works and sold at the Tower itself.
The original envelope reads:
TOWER OF LONDONVIEWS8 PICTURE POSTCARDS(Crown Copyright Reserved)SET 1
LONDON:PRINTED FOR H.M. OFFICE OF WORKSAND SOLD AT THE TOWER
The original red 1/9 price label is still attached.
PLEASE NOTE:This packet originally contained eight postcards. Four original Tower of London postcards remain and are included in this listing.
The surviving photographic postcards include impressive early views of the historic Tower complex, including:
• Beauchamp Tower• Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula• Byward Tower and moat• Additional Tower of London architectural view
The cards themselves are identified as H.M. Office of Works views, and their unused backs are printed “POST CARD – BRITISH MADE.”
HISTORICAL INTEREST
Unlike an ordinary commercially produced London tourist postcard group, this packet was produced specifically for H.M. Office of Works and sold to visitors at the Tower of London.
The Office of Works was responsible for major Crown and government buildings and historic monuments, making these cards interesting not only as early London souvenirs but also as pieces of British government heritage and tourism ephemera.
The envelope additionally carries the wording “Crown Copyright Reserved.”
DATE
No exact publication date is visible on the packet or surviving cards.
Based upon the postcard format, photographic presentation and H.M. Office of Works packaging, this group appears consistent with the interwar period, approximately the 1920s-1930s.
It is therefore described conservatively as pre-WWII rather than assigning an unsupported exact year.
SCARCITY
Individual early Tower of London postcards survive and should not be described as rare.
The original H.M. Office of Works “Tower of London Views – Set 1” packet is substantially more unusual. Current research did not locate another exact Set 1 packet presently indexed for sale.
Because only four of the original eight postcards remain, this should be considered a scarce surviving partial packet rather than a rare complete set.
An excellent historical group for collectors of:
• Tower of London• British history• H.M. Office of Works• Crown Copyright material• Pre-WWII Britain• 1920s-1930s London• Historic British architecture• Vintage British postcards• British government ephemera• London tourism history
The original envelope, Crown Copyright designation, “Set 1” identification and surviving 1/9 price label make this substantially more interesting than four loose Tower of London postcards.
Carefully researched and offered by Echoes of WWII.
