This early school keepsake is marked 1917 on the front cover and was presented “Compliments of Your Teacher.”
The booklet includes decorative period school illustrations, verses, and a printed record of the school community.
School information includes:
States Fork Public School
District No. 18
Mannington District, Marion County, West Virginia
Teacher: Lulu McMillen
County Superintendent: Homer C. Toothman
The booklet also lists members of the school board and a complete printed roster of 16 pupils.
Pupil surnames represented include Morgan, Campbell, Hayes, Basnett, Freeland, McGee, Carpenter, and Rice, giving the booklet additional interest for genealogy and Marion County family-history research.
The front cover features period school imagery surrounding the year 1917, along with the saying:
“Knowledge planted in youth giveth shade in old age.”
Interior pages contain additional illustrated school verses and sentiments.
Original cord/tassel binding is still present.
Condition: Good antique condition for a piece more than 100 years old. Shows expected age toning, scattered foxing and spotting, edge and corner wear, and wear around the binding holes. Cord/tassel shows age and fraying. Printed material remains clear and readable. Please examine all photographs carefully as they are part of the condition description.
An appealing surviving piece of 1917 West Virginia school history, particularly interesting because the school, teacher, officials, and individual pupils are all identified.
