DescriptionThis is an original Japanese hanging scroll painting by Yukawa Shodo (湯川松堂, 1868–1955), created in 1904 to commemorate the Russo-Japanese War.The hand-painted composition depicts a Japanese warship at sea beneath a red sun, steaming through the water with waves in the foreground. An inscription at the lower right includes:“Meiji, Kinoe-Tatsu, Tango / Commemoration of the War Against Russia / [partially illegible] / Yukawa Shodo”“Kinoe-Tatsu” corresponds to 1904 (Meiji 37), the year the Russo-Japanese War began. The inscription explicitly describes the work as a “Commemoration of the War Against Russia” (征露紀念), making this a contemporary work produced during the war period rather than a later historical depiction. The upper inscription on the accompanying wooden box reads:“Commemoration of the War Against Russia – Our Victorious Warship – Painted by Yukawa inscription on the box includes:“Tango, Meiji 37 [1904] / [partially illegible] / Okunishi / [partially illegible]”The unclear portions have intentionally not been interpreted in order to avoid inaccurate attribution.Yukawa Shodo was an established Japanese painter active from the Meiji through Showa periods and a figure of the Osaka art world. He studied under the prominent Kyoto painter Suzuki Shonen and exhibited at Japan’s 5th National Industrial Exhibition in 1903.
