For your consideration is an exceptionally early autograph authorization signed by Admiral Sir Charles Edward Kennedy-Purvis, GBE, KCB (1884–1946), one of the senior architects of British naval administration during the Second World War and later Deputy First Sea Lord. Dated January 21, 1904, the document was written when Kennedy-Purvis was only nineteen years old, just six days after his promotion to lieutenant on January 15, 1904, an unusually rapid advancement following outstanding professional examinations in which he gained five first-class results. The succinct manuscript instruction reads, “Kindly hand any letters to bearer. C. E. Kennedy.” The folded exterior is addressed to “Church House, Dean’s Yard, Westminster, S.W.” and retains a contemporary “PAID” marking, documenting the note’s transmission to the administrative headquarters of the Church of England. The sheet measures 8.75 by 7.0 inches and is executed on fine watermarked laid paper bearing an embossed blue heraldic crest of a dolphin above the Kennedy motto “AVISE LA FIN” (“Consider the End”), an unusually attractive and personal heraldic feature.

Charles Edward Kennedy-Purvis entered the Royal Navy as a cadet aboard HMS Britannia in January 1899, was promoted midshipman in 1900, sub-lieutenant in 1903, and lieutenant on January 15, 1904, placing the present letter at the very beginning of his commissioned career. He subsequently rose through virtually every level of the Royal Navy, commanding HMS Diomede, HMS Concord, HMS Glorious, and the 1st Cruiser Squadron, before serving as President of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. During the Second World War he became Commander-in-Chief, America and West Indies Station, occupying a strategically important Atlantic command during the critical period of convoy warfare and expanding Anglo-American naval cooperation. In July 1942, he was recalled to the Admiralty and appointed Deputy First Sea Lord, a special senior office revived to relieve the First Sea Lord of a substantial portion of the Navy’s administrative burden and allow greater concentration upon strategy and the operational conduct of the war. Hansard records that Kennedy-Purvis assumed those duties on July 29, 1942, with responsibility for the provision, development, training, and fighting efficiency of the Fleet.

Kennedy-Purvis remained Deputy First Sea Lord through the conclusion of the Second World War, serving under First Sea Lords including Admiral of the Fleet Sir Dudley Pound and Admiral of the Fleet Andrew Cunningham. Cunningham later emphasized the extraordinary volume of work Kennedy-Purvis removed from the First Sea Lord’s shoulders and praised his ability, judgment, tact, and administrative skill. His career ultimately brought appointment as Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), together with the American Legion of Merit. He died in 1946 shortly after retiring from active service. The office of Deputy First Sea Lord itself was rarely employed: modern Royal Navy appointment records identify only a small number of officers who held it during the First and Second World Wars, underscoring the exceptional seniority Kennedy-Purvis ultimately attained.

The present document is therefore particularly notable as an extremely early autograph from the formative naval career of a future wartime Admiral and Deputy First Sea Lord, written within days of the promotion that effectively began his career as a commissioned lieutenant. Its combination of identifiable handwriting, precise date, Church House destination, contemporary postal marking, watermarked laid paper, and distinctive embossed Kennedy dolphin-and-motto stationery gives the piece unusual documentary and visual interest. The sheet retains its original correspondence folds with expected age toning and handling wear; there is adhered paper residue to the verso, apparently associated with an earlier attachment, closure, or archival mounting, together with localized fold wear. The manuscript authorization, date, signature, external address, “PAID” marking, watermark, and heraldic crest remain clearly preserved, making this a compelling early-career relic of one of the Royal Navy’s most senior administrative commanders of the Second World War.
