Well, how is everybody and everything out there this kind of weather? How is Pap now, does his pants fit him any better than they did last winter, when the four o'clock excursion was running? What is the chief excitement and the chief amusement out there at present?I would like to be in that small town one night when there is something going on, I think I have learned some things since I have been down here.One thing is this. I learned how to spend every dollar that I get hold of, and I have not done much drinking this summer, but there is other ways of spending it in this small town!
How are all of the boys and girls getting along this summer?Where is Charles Chuck? I haven't heard a word of him since I have been here, and I am getting worried about him. I am afraid that he is dead.I nearly always hear from him, even though you can't see him.Who is going about for Hoffman? I haven't heard anything of him.Does O. White and Lake does he go off hunting on Sundays and nights?...to come in time to take in the fishing trip, if there is any.And it might happen that I won't come home the beginning of this month, and perhaps not until the last of the month.They are talking of shutting the mill for a week or two on account of the Diphtheria, and if they do that I am coming home, for I won't stay here and lay board and not work....as usual.And how about Bowser, has he come back yet?And is he still talking about going out to fishing this summer?And if they are, where are they going, and when are they going?When you answer, let me know if they are going, and when they are going, and when.For I am coming home some time next month and I want...The Diphtheria is very bad at present and it is still spreading, but the doctors are fighting it hard, and one told me this morning that he thought the worst was over.And if they don't shut the mill, I think I will come home unless they are not making full time in the department I work in.Some weeks we don't make more than three or four days, and you know that don't pay, and unless I make time I am not staying long.You don't need to say anything about the Diphtheria to any one, for......you know what cranks there is in that place, and if I come home and they knew that there was any of it here they would get a fit.There is no danger of carrying it unless I would have it, and if I would, I could not come, and it is something that does not stay in your system very long when it develops, and it doesn't amount to much among grown people.Well, no more.
