Original 1898 George Herbert illustrated calendar, published for E.P. Dutton & Co., New York and marked “Printed in Bavaria – 219.”

This beautiful late-Victorian calendar is complete with all 12 months, January through December 1898, arranged across six large illustrated leaves with two months represented on each page.

Each page features a different richly colored seasonal landscape surrounded by an ornate floral border and accompanied by devotional verse from George Herbert, the noted 17th-century English poet and clergyman. Scenes progress through the seasons and include a snowy country village, spring cottage landscape, haymaking scene with horse-drawn wagon, seaside view with boat, autumn harvest landscape and another winter cottage scene.

Printed on substantial textured stock with elaborate shaped/die-cut edges, floral decoration and period color illustrations. Remnants of the original ribbon binding remain at the top.

Condition: Antique condition with significant age-related wear. There are tears, edge and corner losses, chipping, staining/spotting, surface wear and damage/loss around the original binding holes. The original ribbon is largely missing, although remnants remain. Despite the condition issues, all six illustrated leaves and all 12 months are present, and the seasonal artwork retains attractive color. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition and extent of damage.

A scarce surviving piece of late-19th-century illustrated ephemera with appeal to collectors of E.P. Dutton, George Herbert, Victorian calendars, religious/devotional material, Bavarian printing and antique color illustration.
