The correspondence documents Miller's attempts to learn what happened to her son and arrange the disposition of his remains. In one particularly striking passage she writes that she does not know whether James died naturally or killed himself, asking Coe to have someone investigate and determine what occurred. Subsequent letters discuss the undertaker, returning James's body home, burial expenses, his watch and personal belongings, and money apparently remaining in his bank account.
