1870s PA German Himmelsbrief Broadside Jesse Hawley Reading Pa Magdeburg Eye For Sale

scarce, 19th-century Pennsylvania German folk art broadside, printed by Jesse G. Hawley - Reading Pa. (circa 1870s) - known as a Himmelsbrief (Letter from Heaven), specifically featuring the highly sought-after "Magdeburg Letter" text. Printed on a thin, fragile period paper, this striking piece measures approximately 11" x 16.75" and features an entirely blank back side. The typography is set in classic German Fraktur script, highlighted by an elaborate decorative border printed in a vibrant red ink. At the top of the text block sits a charming woodcut vignette of a winged cherub blowing a horn, symbolizing the divine delivery of the letter. Positioned prominently at the center is a detailed illustration of the iconic All-Seeing Eye of God (Auge Gottes), serving as an omniscient spiritual symbol. Historically brought to America by early German immigrants, these protective broadsides were traditionally placed in family Bibles or framed on walls to act as spiritual house blessings and talismans to protect the home from fires, disasters, and pestilence. This piece remains in nice overall condition given its age and fragile nature, showing only light, honest handling including small edge and corner chips that do not compromise the central text block or main imagery. It is a fantastic, authentic addition for collectors of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, early American religious ephemera, folk magic, or antique broadside prints....... code Jsb 342
