Key Visual Elements:
Multimodal Transportation: Rather than focusing strictly on the legislature's architecture, the artist spotlighted the chaotic mix of contemporary transit technologies converging just outside the gates.
Traffic Jam: The scene famously packs five distinct modes of 19th-century transit within inches of each other: pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages, horseback riders, a street railroad car, and a small steam locomotive chugging toward Virginia.
Background: The newly completed cast-iron dome of the United States Capitol looms grandly in the background, symbolizing national unity and continuity shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War.
