1865 “In Memoriam. Abraham Lincoln” – Original Buffalo, N.Y. Memorial Pamphlet
This is an original 1865 printed memorial pamphlet documenting Buffalo, New York’s public response to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the local funeral observances when the funeral train stopped in the city.
Full title (from title page):
In Memoriam. Abraham Lincoln Assassinated At Washington, April 14, 1865: Being a brief account of the proceedings of meetings, action of authorities and societies, speeches, sermons, addresses and other expressions of public feeling on reception of the news and at the funeral obsequies of the president. At Buffalo, N.Y.
Publisher: Printing House of Matthews & Warren, Office of the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser, Buffalo, 1865.
Edited by Henry W. Box. Approximately 64–66 pages. Original blue printed paper wrappers with black mourning border. Cover title: “In Memoriam. Abraham Lincoln. Buffalo, N.Y.”
This is a scarce contemporary local compilation drawn from Buffalo newspapers. It records the city’s mourning, meetings, and reactions immediately after the assassination, as well as the funeral train’s stop in Buffalo on April 27, 1865 (where tens of thousands viewed the remains). Bibliographic references include Monaghan 419 and Sabin 41192. An edition of roughly 2,500 copies was printed. Copies are held in major institutional collections (including the New York Public Library, Library of Congress, and Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection).
Condition:
Original blue wrappers present but worn, with edge chipping, losses, staining, and general age-related wear (typical for unbound or lightly bound 1865 pamphlets). Interior pages show foxing, toning, and minor staining consistent with age. One interior page (poem by Edmund C. Stedman) bears a period or early handwritten inscription: “Ward W. Bissell Jun 2 the 1855” (or similar; date as written). Pages appear complete based on the provided images; overall a usable collector’s copy of a scarce original wrapper item. Please review all photos carefully.
Historical context:
Printed within weeks of the assassination and the Buffalo funeral train stop. These local memorial pamphlets are desirable to Lincolniana and Civil War collectors as primary printed records of community reaction.
Notes for buyers:
• Original 1865 printing in the distinctive blue wrappers with mourning border.
• Rare in the trade; institutional holdings are far more common than private copies.
• Condition is worn but authentic and complete enough for display or research.
• Sold as shown; no returns on condition issues visible in photos.
Ships carefully packed. Reasonable shipping to U.S. addresses; international possible with buyer covering extra costs/insurance.
