Original 1848 handwritten and printed real estate deed from Wayne County, Ohio, documenting a property conveyance from Arad G. Butler to Almon B. Butler.
Dated May 4, 1848, the document was executed on an early printed legal form headed “JUDGE SWAN\'S IMPROVED FORM” and “KNOW ALL MEN,” with a decorative American eagle at the upper left.
The deed identifies Arad G. Butler in connection with Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, and records the transfer of real property to Almon B. Butler.
Of particular historical interest, the handwritten property description also preserves portions of the property\'s earlier chain of title. Previous conveyances mentioned in the document include Joshua Hartman and Catharine, his wife, as well as Hugh R. Caldwell and Anne, his wife, with references to earlier Wayne County deed records.
The deed was acknowledged in Wayne County before a Justice of the Peace on May 4, 1848.
A later manuscript docket on the reverse records that the instrument was:
Received November 17, 1852
and subsequently entered into the Wayne County records. The endorsement is signed by H. J. Conner, Recorder, who is independently documented as serving as Wayne County Recorder during this period.
The reverse also retains additional period manuscript notations relating to the deed and its recording.
This is an appealing piece of original pre-Civil War American legal and genealogical ephemera, particularly relevant to collectors and researchers of Wayne County, Chippewa Township, Ohio history, the Butler family, early American property records and 19th-century legal documents.

HISTORICAL / GENEALOGICAL INTEREST
Period historical sources independently document an Almon B. Butler in Ohio during this same period, including an 1849 marriage notice. Historical genealogical material also records a Joshua Hartman of the region married to a Catharine, consistent with names appearing in the deed\'s earlier chain-of-title references.
These historical references provide useful avenues for further genealogical research; however, no claim is made that every similarly named individual found in secondary sources has been conclusively proven to be the same person named in this deed.

Despite the condition issues, the document remains substantially intact and retains extensive handwritten content, printed text, signatures, legal certification and the later recording endorsement.
The document has not been cleaned, restored or repaired by Collexcion.
Please examine all photographs carefully. They show the actual document offered and are an important part of the condition description.
Due to its age and fragile condition, careful handling is recommended.
