1819 Virginia Land Grant Signed by Governor James P. Preston – Greenbrier For Sale

The grant recites that the land was surveyed on October 2, 1818, under Treasury Warrant No. 5290, and was officially granted on April 30, 1819 at Richmond. It contains a full manuscript metes-and-bounds description locating the property on the south side of the Greenbrier River adjoining lands of Henry Snyderstraker, John McDowell, and the heirs of Chambers.

The document bears Preston's bold original signature together with the original embossed paper seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The reverse retains its contemporary filing endorsement identifying the grantee and acreage.

Issued during the final year of Preston's governorship, this document represents the continuing settlement of Virginia's western frontier just before the creation of the state of West Virginia and during one of the most significant periods of early American expansion.

Condition: Very good to excellent. Original folds as issued, light age toning, attractive dark manuscript, strong signature, and intact embossed seal.

A handsome and highly displayable early American land grant combining frontier history, Virginia history, and an original gubernatorial autograph.
