Exceptional early American land document dated January 15, 1810, issued under President James Madison to Daniel Moore of Washington County, Pennsylvania. The partially printed federal patent records Moore’s purchase through the Steubenville, Ohio Land Office of the northeast quarter of Section 31 in Range 5, part of the early federal lands opened for settlement in Ohio.
Signed “James Madison” as President and countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith, with the original United States paper seal surviving at lower left. Moore appears to be the prominent early Washington, Pennsylvania businessman and civic figure who served as town postmaster and participated in local banking, transportation and public affairs.
Mounted with an early Cleveland surveyor/draughtsman/real-estate trade card and period portrait. The card gives a residence of 67 Clinton Street, Cleveland; contemporary city directories identify civil engineer Robert Cartwright at that exact address, providing an intriguing later provenance connection.
Professionally framed. Document shows expected age toning, foxing, folds and wear consistent with a 216-year-old original. Please review photographs carefully for condition. A highly displayable Madison presidential document combining early Ohio settlement, land history and American political history.
