The Story of the Stone: Polished Koch Shaft Sulfides
Weighing in at well over two pounds, this dense cabinet specimen was pulled directly from the historic Koch Shaft of the Silvermines District. The sheer heft of this piece betrays what is hidden inside: a massive concentration of heavy metal sulfides.
The front display face has been taken to a brilliant polish, providing a crystal-clear window into the chaotic hydrothermal matrix. Quartz and topaz struggle to bind together massive, chunky deposits of dark wolframite, argentiferous (silver-bearing) galena, and a highly concentrated cap of authentic arsenopyrite.
Cut with a flat base to stand completely upright, the contrast between the glassy, finished front face and the untamed, rugged sulfide matrix on the back makes this a spectacular display piece.
Historic Provenance & Metallurgical Value
Harvested from the largely inaccessible Koch Shaft, this raw matrix was preserved for decades in a private barn collection by Charley Cox, a notable alumnus of the Missouri School of Mines (MSM). Beyond its display value, specimens this saturated with Koch shaft sulfides are highly prized for independent metallurgical study. These specific sulfide pockets are known carriers of elusive precious metals, including gold.
