In 1861 Camp McClellan was built on Staten Island for the training and muster of a number of New York Volunteer regiments. By 1862 the Camp had been renamed Camp Tompkins The post was abandoned after the war and it;\'s exact site, somewhere in the vicinity of Fort Tompkins is unknown, An original Civil War Union Army receipt for the issue of Sibley Tents for the 15th US Infantry, issued at \"Camp McClellan Governors Island\" (actually Staten Island) , November 12, 1861, and signed by Lt George B Eckert , 3rd Infantry. 1p 8 x 11\" ink on lined paper. Edge wear, Overall VG Comes w service info for Lt George Brown Eckert of Reading, Pennsylvania, who enlisted with the 25th Pennsylvania in 1861 as a Musician, but was soon commissioned an officer with the 3rd US Infantry, serving 1861-1864. This is one of the few Staten Island Civil War military documents I have seen.
