Original circa 1910s antique portrait photograph from the Georgiana Mygatt Gray family material, showing three women posed together at the Rockwood photographic studio in New York City.
The photographer's mount is marked “Rockwood, N.Y. Photo” with the studio address 2388 Broadway, Near 87th St., N.Y.
Of particular genealogical importance is the handwritten family identification on the reverse. The writing appears to identify the women as:
“Aunt Louise”
“Virginia”
“Grandmother Stanton”
The exact correspondence between the three written names and the individual women has not been established, so no attempt has been made to assign a specific identity to each face.
This photograph comes from material associated with Georgiana Mygatt Gray, who married Edmund Courtlandt Stanton on May 15, 1912, at Christ Church in Greenwich, Connecticut. The presence of “Grandmother Stanton” among the handwritten identifications makes this an especially interesting piece of Stanton family genealogy.
Based on the clothing, hairstyles, photographic presentation and known family context, circa 1910s is a reasonable working date, although the precise date of the photograph is unknown.
A particularly appealing genealogical photograph with connections to the STANTON, GRAY and MYGATT families, as well as the noted Rockwood New York City photographic studio.
Condition: The photograph retains very good facial detail and contrast. The cardboard mount shows considerable age-related foxing and spotting, toning, edge and corner wear, and loss/damage at an upper corner. The reverse has additional spotting and discoloration but retains the important handwritten family identification. Please examine the photographs closely for the complete condition.
Provenance: From the Georgiana Mygatt Gray family material. Georgiana Mygatt Gray married Edmund Courtlandt Stanton in 1912. The reverse carries period/early handwritten Stanton-family identification.
