Construction and Design • Built by master shipbuilder Donald McKay in East Boston, Massachusetts. • Commissioned originally for Enoch Train before being sold to Grinnell, Minturn & Company of New York. • Measured roughly 225 to 235 feet long with a sharp, sleek hull designed specifically for maximum speed. Record-Breaking Voyages • Sailed from New York around Cape Horn to San Francisco in 1851 in 89 days and 21 hours under the command of Captain Josiah Perkins Creesy and his wife, navigator Eleanor Creesy. • Beat her own record in 1854 with a time of 89 days and 8 hours. • Held the record for the fastest passage by a sailing ship between New York and San Francisco for 135 years, until 1989.
