Vintage Northwood Design Wooden Cheesebox Sewing & Needlework Collection – Milwaukee / 1985 Connection

Offered is a large vintage sewing, embroidery and needlework collection centered around a distinctive round wooden cheesebox-style sewing/craft box stamped “Northwood Design.” The box has a charming handmade/vintage appearance with a decorative quilted fabric cover featuring a horse/equestrian design and compass rose, surrounded by red, blue and cream patchwork fabric and finished with an elaborate cream-colored lace trim around the sides.
NORTHWOOD DESIGN / MILWAUKEE HISTORY
The wooden cheesebox is stamped “Northwood Design.” This is an especially interesting piece because of its connection to the tradition of decorated wooden cheeseboxes associated with the Milwaukee/Wisconsin area.
The collection is also accompanied by/associated with a 1985 press photograph featuring Eileen Janick and decorated wooden cheeseboxes with designs in Milwaukee, making the historical context particularly interesting for collectors of vintage Wisconsin craft, sewing, folk-art and decorative wooden boxes.
