Native American Alaskan Scammon Bay Yupik Woven tapernaq Grass Baskets Knob Lidsmade by : Lucy Akerelrea:The Art of Yup’ik Basket Weaving

Lucy Kasayuli Akerelrea, also known as Lucy Akerelrea, was born in 1916 in Scammon Bay, Alaska. A proud woman of Yup’ik heritage, Lucy was part of a rich tradition of Native Alaskan artistry, where everyday materials from the land were transformed into beautiful and useful works of art.

Yup’ik basket weaving begins with tapernaq, a strong grass that grows in sandy beach areas. Gathered from the surrounding landscape, this natural material was carefully woven into baskets used for storing small items and other everyday needs. Local dyes could add color, while intricate patterns and unique designs reflected the creativity and skill of the weaver.

Some baskets featured fine, delicate stitches, while others had wider, bolder weaving. Designs could include animals and other meaningful patterns, making each basket a distinctive expression of the maker’s craftsmanship.

Through this traditional art, Lucy Akerelrea represents a lasting connection between the Yup’ik people, their homeland, and the knowledge passed down through generations. Her story reminds us that a handmade basket is more than a practical object; it is a piece of cultural heritage, shaped by skilled hands and inspired by the land of Alaska.

Lucy Akerelrea’s legacy lives on through the beauty of Yup’ik basketry and the traditions it preserves.
