[About the Artist: Koichi Kamata]Born in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture in 1925. He began his apprenticeship under his father, Bunichi Kamata (also a master craftsman), around 1939 and started creating Kokeshi dolls during this time.After World War II, he consistently dedicated his life to crafting Kokeshi dolls at his home workshop. Following his father's passing in 1984, he became the pillar of the Kamata family in Shiroishi, preserving their rich, long-standing tradition until he passed away in 2004 at the age of 80.
[About Kokeshi]Kokeshi is a handmade wooden doll originating from the hot spring mountain villages in the Tōhoku region of northeastern Japan.
