Vintage Japan Ceramic Tiger Pair Tortoiseshell Drip Glaze MCM Figurines Lot: $130.00
Two snarling tigers, one prowling and one sitting up mid-roar, in a deep amber glaze with hand painted black stripes. They were made as a pair in Japan in the 1950s or 60s and they are still together. These have a lot more attitude than the usual mid-century animal figurine. Both have open mouths with white teeth picked out, heavy paws, and tails that curl back on themselves. The glaze is glossy and runs from caramel to dark brown, so they catch the light well on a shelf or mantel. The prowling tiger is about 9 to 10 inches long. The seated tiger is about 7 to 8 inches long. Each has a red ink Japan stamp underneath. The stamps are partly smudged, which is common on these. Condition: no chips, cracks or repairs found on either one. The unglazed feet and base have light staining and a few dark specks from age. There are a few tiny glaze pops from the kiln if you look closely. The round hole in the base of the seated tiger and the small hole in the belly of the prowling tiger are factory vent holes, not damage. Sold as a pair. They will be wrapped separately and double boxed.
