Vintage Ceramic Horse Head Bookend White Gold Mane Weighted MCM Decor 7”: $54.95
MUST LOVE HORSES!!This one is hard to part with. So handsome—and in this case I actually love the age and wear. This vintage ceramic horse head has a glossy ivory-white body with an exaggerated sculptural metallic gold mane, and the areas where the gold has softened and worn over time give it considerably more character than a pristine reproduction ever could. Please note! All of my items are priced to sell specifically to an customer. Listings for high-quality vintage 1920s–1970s, mid-century decor and barware are often heavily marked up on Chairish and 1stDibs—sometimes 2–3x. I LOVE sourcing and collecting and have handpicked every item for its uniqueness, rarity or visual impact. I price them here on to share these things with other people like me who appreciate them. I simply try to make back what I spent, plus the time that goes into sourcing, cleaning, packing, etc. So please enjoy and shop!!The horse itself is beautifully stylized, with a long sculptural face, recessed eyes and softly modeled features. The real showstopper is the mane: a series of large dimensional curls running from the forehead all the way down the neck, originally finished in bright metallic gold.It has a great mid-century / Hollywood Regency look and would be especially good mixed into a bookshelf, library, bar, office or equestrian-themed room rather than treated as a traditional horse figurine. The piece is hollow ceramic but has loose granular material inside that sounds like sand when gently shaken, apparently added to give the piece extra weight and stability. The broad, flat-backed form and weighted construction make it particularly suitable as a decorative bookend, although I have not found a maker’s mark or original label confirming its intended use.Measures approximately 7” tall × 5.5” wide. The underside retains an old cork covering, now worn and with some loss as shown. The glazed white ceramic shows overall fine crazing consistent with age. The metallic gold finish has areas of rubbing, fading and finish loss, particularly across the raised curls of the mane.Personally, I think the worn gold makes the piece—the irregular flashes of bright and mellowed metallic finish emphasize every curl and give it an authentically aged character that suits the sculpture beautifully. No visible maker’s mark. I would estimate it as mid-20th century, but am leaving the maker and exact date unattributed.A wonderfully graphic vintage piece for equestrian decor, Hollywood Regency, mid-century interiors, a bookshelf or anyone who just appreciates a really handsome horse.
