DESCRIPTION

Offered is this vintage matching pair of horse-shaped bookends, believed to date to the late 1960s or very early 1970s.

These are the exact pair that came from my family's home. They are distinctive full-body horse silhouettes standing on rectangular metal bases. The horses are depicted in a dynamic prancing/rearing pose, creating an attractive equestrian display when the pair is placed on either side of books.

The bookends have an aged antique brass/bronze/greenish patina with visible surface variation and signs of age and use. They are made from formed/stamped metal rather than being extremely heavy solid-brass bookends.

IMPORTANT PROVENANCE:

The exact pair was in my parents' home by September 3, 1973, based on a family photograph from that date showing these bookends in the home. This provides documented family provenance establishing that the pair was already owned by that date.

The underside of one bookend has an oval label reading:

MADE IN HONG KONG

There is also an old rectangular sticker on the underside reading:

B8 $20.50

Based on the family's recollection and purchasing habits, the $20.50 marking is believed to represent the original retail price. The meaning of the B8 portion has not been identified.

The dating is likewise stated conservatively. The documented 1973 family photograph establishes that these exact bookends were already in the home by September 3, 1973.
