Welcome to the Florida jungle. This moody black and white postcard features the overgrown stone arches of what was heavily billed as the Old Spanish Mission in New Smyrna. Our sender Sadie decided the blank right margin was the perfect place to write a quick note sideways from Savannah Georgia apologizing to Ida for missing her in New Orleans. As for the physical condition this antique card has held up nicely but shows expected signs of age. You will find standard corner rounding minor edge wear and general age toning across the board. The back features a very crisp 1917 New Orleans cancellation stamp and an old school undivided back layout which is pretty funny considering it was mailed roughly a decade after divided backs became the national standard. Someone was definitely cleaning out their old desk drawer!

Here is a fantastic piece of early 1900s tourist marketing deception. The ruins pictured here were heavily advertised to northern travelers as an ancient Spanish Mission to drum up sightseeing revenue. In reality these are the remains of a nineteenth century sugar mill that got wrecked during the Seminole Wars. The postcard publishers knew that ancient religious ruins sounded incredibly romantic while an abandoned syrup factory sounded like a pile of industrial trash so they just changed the history entirely to sell more cards.
