Historical Background:The D-Day invasion of Normandy was the largest amphibious assault in history, with over 125,000 Allied troops storming the beaches of northern France. For that "day of days" and the difficult hedgerow fighting that followed, someUS Army assault troops, including GIs of the 2nd Armored Division and 2nd Infantry Division, were issued the specially designed two piece "frogskin" camouflage HBT uniform. Field experience quickly revealed the frogskin uniform was too similar to German SS "peas pattern" camouflage, and most sets were withdrawn by mid to late summer of 1944 in favor of olive drab HBT or wool service dress. Any surviving piece of US Army WW2 frogskin camouflage remains highly sought after today. We have shown a photo of 2nd Infantry Division officers looking over a map in Normandy in July 1944; the GI at right wears a very similar Army frogskin HBT shirt.
