Unusual vintage novelty Christmas greeting designed to resemble a brown paper grocery bag.
The front reads:
"May a MERRY CHRISTMASBE'IN THE BAG'FOR YOU"
Opening the unusual bag-style greeting reveals a humorous illustrated verse built around the things a grocery bag might carry, including potatoes ("spuds"), soap chips, coffee, ale and groceries.
The final portion explains that what struck the sender was all the WISHES the bag could hold, ending:
"FOR YOU — FROM ME!"
Signed "Robert Amero" in ink.
Color illustrations show a humorous grocery-store character carrying an overflowing bag, packages of chips, potatoes, coffee and ale, along with Christmas holly and holiday greeting signs.
A small printed identification/code appears near the center and includes "U.S.A."; no specific manufacturer attribution is being made.
This is an especially unusual form of vintage Christmas paper ephemera because the grocery-bag construction itself forms part of the Christmas joke.
An exact example of this particular "In the Bag" Christmas greeting was not located during current market research, although other Depression/WWII-era novelty greetings using brown paper and grocery-bag themes are documented.
Excellent collectible for vintage Christmas, novelty greeting card, grocery advertising, Depression-era humor and antique paper ephemera collections.
Sold exactly as photographed.
