Russian Small Silver 84 Orthodox Icon — Mother of God

A “Russian Small Silver Icon, Silver 84” of the Mother of God is typically a small Orthodox religious icon, often of the “Mother of God of the Sign” (Znamenie), made in the Russian imperial 84 silver standard, and may be an antique or a reproduction.

What “Silver 84” Means

The 84 mark is the Russian imperial silver hallmark, indicating the item is made to the 84% silver standard used in the Russian Empire from the 19th Century. This mark is often stamped on the rim or back of the icon's silver cover (oklad) or on the icon itself.

Icon Type and Significance

The “Mother of God of the Sign” (Znamenie) is one of the most venerated Russian Orthodox icons, historically linked to Novgorod. According to tradition, in 1169 the Virgin Mary “gave a sign” to the defenders of Novgorod, turning her gaze away from the attackers toward the city, inspiring them to victory. This icon is considered a spiritual protector and a symbol of divine mercy.
