This is an incredibly rare, authentic piece of British Home Front history. It was given to me by my Uncle in 1980 with all of his medals and war memorabilia. While standard sterling silver ARP badges were mass-issued to general neighborhood wardens, this specific base metal and blue enamel variant was custom-made for a private company\'s internal civil defence unit.During the Blitz, essential engineering and manufacturing firms dispersed their machinery and workforces into rural market towns to escape heavy Luftwaffe bombing.
I believe that J. F. Ltd refers to J. Fellowes Ltd who manufactured vital heavy presswork, sheet metal assemblies, and localized munitions components contracted by the British Ministry of Supply. Their factory was temporarily relocated to Ludlow from Birmingham during the war years due to bomb damage.
Legally required to protect their own facilities, these factories formed dedicated, internal plant ARP squads (fire-watchers, first-aid, and rescue teams). This badge was issued strictly to authorized employees serving in the factory\'s private air-raid unit.Design & Markings:Front: Striking Art Deco condensed \"ARP\" lettering inlaid with classic blue vitreous enamel. The lower scroll is clearly stamped with the factory\'s identity, \"J. F. LTD\"Reverse: Features a completely plain, smooth reverse with a functional horizontal pin and C-clasp mechanism. It measures 30mm wide x 21 mm highCondition Report:An honest, untouched \"collector-grade\" item showing genuine wartime wear and historic patina. The blue enamel on the front is largely intact with some light, authentic surface aging and minor wear around the lower lettering, giving it excellent character. The original rear pin mechanism is fully intact, solid, and completely functional. Please study the high-resolution photos carefully to judge the condition for yourself.
