Rare Baroque Bronze Four-Lugged Devotional Medal — St. Benedict & Virgin of Montserrat 20mm
A genuine sand-cast bronze devotional medal from the late 17th to early 18th century (circa 1670–1730). This piece features the distinctive quadrilobed (four-lugged) design characteristic of Baroque-period religious pendants — significantly rarer than standard oval medals of the same era.
Front (Obverse)
Depicts a standing figure identified as Saint Benedict of Nursia, holding a crozier (staff) and a book. Benedictine medals of this type were widely carried across Europe as protection against plague and evil.
Back (Reverse)
Shows a seated figure holding a child, consistent with the Virgin of Montserrat (the Black Madonna), patron of Catalonia and a major pilgrimage destination in Spain.
Manufacturing & Authenticity
The medal displays the granular texture and seam lines typical of traditional sand-casting. The integral bail (loop) is oriented parallel to the face — a diagnostic feature of 17th-century manufacture. The piece is a verified 300-year-old artifact that predates modern industrial stamping.
Condition
Ground-found with a stable, dark “soil” patina and surface pitting consistent with an archaeological find. Lugs and main figures are clearly identifiable. The patina has not been cleaned, preserving the primary proof of age. Please refer to photos for exact condition.
