This rare and deeply symbolic Orthodox icon depicts a tender and unique moment from the life of the Holy Family: the First Steps of Jesus Christ. Unlike most icons, where the Infant Jesus is shown in the arms of the Mother of God, here the Christ Child reaches out with open hands and gaze toward His Most Pure Mother, while the Theotokos lovingly bends toward Him.

According to tradition, during the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt, the Divine Infant made His very first steps on earth—walking toward His Mother. This sacred moment is captured in the icon, which has long been especially beloved by children. Spiritually, it symbolizes the union of the Divine and the human, the closeness of God to mankind, and the loving bond between Christ and His Mother.

The original icon is venerated at the Monastery of Saint Gerasimus of the Jordan, one of the most ancient monasteries of the Holy Land, founded in the 5th century near the Jordan River and the Dead Sea.
