ABOUT THIS IMAGE
MARILYN MONROE
Marilyn Monroe – Red Swimsuit Dressing Room Candid, 1953
Marilyn Monroe laughs exuberantly while sitting cross-legged in her dressing room during production of How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), still wearing the film’s famous red jeweled swimsuit and matching strappy heels. The refrigerator and stove visible behind her make the setting unmistakably informal, creating a striking contrast between the glamour of Monroe’s Travilla-designed costume and the ordinary backstage surroundings. Her closed eyes, broad smile and relaxed posture transform the photograph into an unusually spontaneous behind-the-scenes image rather than a conventional studio publicity portrait.
The red one-piece swimsuit was designed by William Travilla for the fashion-show sequence in How to Marry a Millionaire, where Monroe’s character Pola Debevoise models the jeweled costume while refusing to wear her glasses. Contemporary archive captions identify this exact candid as Monroe relaxing in her dressing room between scenes during the 1953 production, still wearing the matching diamonds and armlet associated with the costume. The combination of one of Monroe’s recognizable film costumes with such an unguarded backstage moment gives the photograph particular appeal for collectors of both Monroe imagery and production-era Hollywood photography.
Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962), born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles, rose from professional modeling to become one of the defining stars of postwar Hollywood. The year 1953 proved pivotal, with major roles in Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and How to Marry a Millionaire firmly establishing her as an international star. She later appeared in The Seven Year Itch, Bus Stop, and Some Like It Hot, while also seeking greater control over her career through Marilyn Monroe Productions. Her extraordinary photographic legacy—spanning formal studio portraits, publicity stills, candids, and behind-the-scenes photography—remains one of the most widely collected bodies of celebrity imagery in twentieth-century cinema.
