Large Antique French Figural Bronze Writing Set w/Pierre Corneille Statue c.1880s

: :

Presented is a very large magnificent bronze desktop writing set with two ink wells, pen tray and a beautiful statue of the most famous French dramatist Pierre Corneille designed in a classic Second Empire style.

Pierre Corneille (6 June 1606 – 1 October 1684) was a French tragedian. He is generally considered one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists, along with Molière and Racine. As a young man, he earned the valuable patronage of Cardinal Richelieu, who was trying to promote classical tragedy along formal lines, but later quarrelled with him, especially over his best-known play, Le Cid, about a medieval Spanish warrior, which was denounced by the newly formed Académie française for breaching the unities. He continued to write well-received tragedies for nearly forty years.

The set was created of massive cast bronze, very nicely and intricately made in France around the 1880s or earlier.

The set is in excellent condition - there are some very minor age-related wear, but there is no damage or repairs whatsoever.

The size is 18\" by 11 1/2\" by 10 3/4\", very heavy - it weighs 28 lb. I am sorry for the expensive shipping cost but with this weight and size it costs that much.
